Startup City is a 3D isometric business game that teaches IT fundamentals by running businesses on Harbour Island. Start at the Corner Market: unpack a till, scanner and printer, plug cables into the right ports, fix a missing printer driver and make the first sale. Then open Byte Repair, Head Office, the Stockroom, Harbour Branch and Cloud Hub, where fourteen campaign levels have you upgrade PCs, set up accounts, build databases and networks, secure a working day, automate a warehouse, troubleshoot a morning breakdown and keep the city trading through a disaster. Everything is hands-on: drag, plug, configure and test.
Players learn to represent data in binary, hexadecimal and Unicode; choose devices and components for real jobs and tell storage capacity from speed; connect peripherals through the right ports and drivers; manage operating systems, accounts, permissions, files and software licences; design, query and protect relational databases with SQL; build and troubleshoot wired, wireless and internet connections; apply authentication, least privilege, encryption and safe working practices; read and write programs and automations; troubleshoot methodically from evidence and know when to escalate; and plan backups and continuity so a business keeps running. It covers all fifteen lessons of Wikiversity's IT Fundamentals course.
